Otherwise, it toasts evenly. I like the single slice function. My biggest complaint is the knob that controls the toasting time provides zero resistance, so it feels like you’re twirling a useless dial. But the controller does work, so I accept this drawback.

Review: We picked this toaster specifically because we thought “One Slice” meant only 1/2 of the heating elements would heat up when toasting in just 1 slot, which is what we do 85% of the time. And esp. important to us since electricity is expensive in our small remote town. However, when One Slice is engaged, HB’s Sure-Toast technology turns off the center heating elements part way thru the toasting process in order to “toast evenly” and the elements in the outer side of the empty slot remain on. Not what we wanted, but otherwise it works well.

Review: Update to my negative complaint below. I contacted Hamilton Beach Customer Support and after a brief investigation they sent me a new toaster. The new one is working as it should I think the old one was defective from day one as it was stiff to operate and jammed constantly the new one is great right now. I will update again if problems occur.

Review: The photos show a bagel with the bottom backwards (in the toaster). You can see the bottom isnt toasted at all (because it is in wrong) while the top is, though uneven. The 2nd photo shows the outside, the bottom is toasted while it is a bit unclear the top has cheddar cheese on it, is just warmed as it should be.

Review: We replaced our 8-year old toaster that suddenly stopped working with the same make and model. Does not toast as quite evenly as its predecessor, but toasts OK. The main thing we worry about is the latch you put down to initiate toasting; using just enough pressure so the latch engages feels like it might break — even though we try to be gentle (too gentle, of course, the latch just pops back up).
